When young people are struggling, they often don’t have the words to explain what they’re feeling. Unlike adults, children and teens may lack the emotional vocabulary or maturity to express their inner experiences. That’s why it’s important to look at the whole picture—their behaviors, emotions, and reactions.

At Connected Roots, we understand that changes in behavior can be a child’s way of communicating that something is wrong. If you notice your child facing big emotions they can’t explain, therapy can offer the support they need.

Recognizing Signs of Distress in Children and Teens

Here are some common signs of emotional distress to be aware of:
Social Withdrawal

If your child is pulling away from others or acting more distant than usual, they may be dealing with challenges like bullying, problems at home, or low self-esteem.

Dropping Grades

Children and teens who are struggling emotionally may begin to lose interest in schoolwork or have trouble concentrating, which can lead to a drop in their grades.

Difficulty Sleeping

If your child is sleeping excessively, struggling to fall or stay asleep, or having frequent nightmares, it could be a sign of underlying mental health concerns.

Difficulty Focusing

It’s normal for children to get distracted at times, but ongoing trouble with focus may point to underlying issues like ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, depression, or other concerns.

Ongoing Sadness

Sadness is often one of the most visible signs that something might be wrong. If your child seems down for an extended period, it could be a sign of a deeper issue.

Anger & Aggression

Children often have a hard time putting their feelings into words or explaining what they're going through. This can lead to frustration, anger, or even aggressive behavior.

Dietary Issues

If you notice that your child is suddenly engaging in unhealthy eating habits such as binging, purging, or starving themselves, it’s important to seek help from a professional.

Moodiness

Mood swings are a normal part of growing up, especially during the teenage years. However, if they become so intense that they affect daily life at school or at home, it could be a sign that something more serious is going on.
